We’ve officially hit our first deadline of this legislative session. Of the nearly 800 Senate bills that were filed this session for consideration by our chamber, we approved about 400 of them.

A Car Seat Checkup event, sponsored by Safe Kids Tulsa Area, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis, Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, LIFT Healthy Start, Choctaw County Coalition and State Farm, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 10 at 502 W. Duke St. in Hugo. Nationally certified technicians will be onsite to show caregivers how to properly install car seats and check those already installed. A limited number of car seats will be available.

The highest chance of Frozen precipitation this week will come in the form of rain, sleet and snow Thursday night and Friday with low temperatures near 20 by Saturday morning. Ice accumulation is possible Thursday night that could impact travel. A rapid warming trend will kick in and we will hit 48 on Saturday afternoon and near 68 on Sunday with sunshine for both days.

DURANT –– The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) through Project Pehlichi is offering a special opportunity this summer for Native American students with interests in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Birthday celebration

A tribute concert and 80th birthday celebration for Dr. Ed Ellis will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at Antlers High School auditorium. Admission is free. Ragtime pianist Adam Swanson will perform at 1, followed by the birthday celebration reception. Everyone is invited.

Choctaw County students display hard work during annual livestock show

The Choctaw County Junior Livestock Show was held last week at the Agriplex. Local students displayed lots of work as they walked the ring proudly showing their livestock or exhibited their skills in the Ag Mechanics. Bills will stop illegal marijuana grows, improve product safety and health

OKLAHOMA CITY – Following the largest single day illegal marijuana bust in state history last month, House Republicans have advanced a comprehensive medical marijuana policy plan to stop illegal grows and foster a safer, fairer free market for the product.
Misdemeanor charges filed on local man

CHOCTAW COUNTY –– A local man was arrested last week and is currently booked into Choctaw County Jail on three misdemeanor complaints. According to reports from the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Office, the communications center was informed that a 17-year-old female had escaped a possible rape situation when she ran into a convenience store in Soper, Okla.
