Hugo school board upholds coach’s termination

Contributing Writer The Hugo Public School Board terminated assistant varsity boys basketball coach Demontre Akins after a nearly three-hour due process hearing last week. The firing resulted from an altercation between Akins and two high school students after a basketball game in February, which was caught on camera and witnessed by multiple students and school officials.

OMRF scientist identifies genetic cause of rare disease

Four decades after a rare neurological disorder first surfaced, an Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist has determined its cause thanks to tiny flies. Scientist Wan Hee Yoon, Ph.D., used Drosophila, the common fruit fly, to pinpoint a genetic mutation that more recently caused severe developmental and metabolic issues in four children of Middle Eastern descent.

The KEDDO Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program is looking for special people to visit and advocate for longterm care residents. Most residents just need a friendly face to listen and convey to them that someone cares. An Ombudsman can work to resolve any concerns or problems residents may have within the facility. The Ombudsman volunteer is a person who cares enough to want to make a difference in the resident’s life and will work with the facility to resolve their concerns.
