Body

Funeral services for Dona Kaye Whisenhunt Trapp, of Hugo, Okla., were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 29, 2021 at Fort Towson Gymnasium.

Dona Kaye Trapp was born on Nov. 17, 1948, in Sacramento, Calif., to Wright “Jay” and Allene (Mills) Whisenhunt. She went to her final resting place on Oct. 26, 2021, at the age of 72. Dona was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ronnie Whisenhunt; granddaughter, Kerbi Davis and great-nephew, Ryan Brown.

Dona graduated from Nashoba High School, Class of 1966. She attended SOSU where she gathered lifelong friends and family in her roommates, Sharon Trapp and Tab Winters, whose adventures of their college escapades would not surface for decades. She earned her teaching degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Class of 1969. Dona began her 47-year career in secondary education at Forest Grove School, finding her place at Fort Towson Schools until retirement with a 37- year tenure, rarely ever forgetting a student’s name. Following retirement, her hustle and grit led her to the role of a cage cashier, for The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, where a former student taught her the ropes. She grew to love her job and her patrons over the past five years.

Dona first and foremost was a devout mother and the matriarch of the family. She possessed the fortitude to bring any idea she had to fruition and most knew to fall in beside her or get out of her way. She cherished family above all things, was a defender and promoter of those she loved, and her baby brother never made a wrong move in her world. Her friendships were too numerous to mention, and she was a surrogate mother to many children at school and in the world of rodeo. Dona served as the secretary for OYRA throughout her girls’ rodeo years, with her sidekick Linda Vandever, covering a million miles and stretching the dollar to make it possible to provide the opportunities, precious memories and

achievements for her daughters. Whether it was at a rodeo, basketball, softball or baseball game, you could always find her cheering her kids and grandchildren on to the winner’s circle. Nona, as she was known to all, was everyone’s number one fan. An outstanding seamstress, interior designer and craft extraordinaire were a few hats she sported well. If you had an event or needed a costume for anything, Dona was the lady everyone went to, and she always had just what they needed. Dona was a member of the Sawyer Baptist Church and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dona is survived by her three daughters: Johnna Kinslow and husband, Lynn of Hugo, Mikki Jo Thompson and husband, Cody of Colbert, Okla., Chandy Abney and husband, Alvin of Hugo; special daughter, Sonya Davis and partner, Jeff Davis of Fort Towson, Okla.; grandchildren: Justi Baker and husband, Jake, Jena Rae Kellum, Sassi Stephens and husband, Cooper, Keily Kae Abney and fiance, Landon Self, Braydon Thompson, Brycen Thompson, Kyla Lynn Kinslow; special grandchildren: Ty Davis and fiance, Emily Hathorn, and Tori Davis; great-grandchildren: Ali Rose Baker, Braylee Daniel, Brax Davis, Taylynn Balch and twins, Newt and Jasper Stephens; niece, Kelis Whisenhunt and nephew, Kenny Whisenhunt. Dona had an extensive and incredibly special friendship with her sidekick, Linda Vandever in addition to her cherished friends: Susan Smith, Hazel Stinnett, Ginger Winters and Connie Cody, along with a host of other family, friends and loved ones.

Interment followed the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Bro. Brent Coffey and Bro. Otis Cayton officiating, under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home.
