Memorial services for Barry Reagan Smith, of Hugo, Okla., were held at 10 a.m. July 10, 2021 at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Soper, Okla. Barry passed away July 5, 2021, at the age of 72.

Barry Reagan Smith was born on Nov. 1, 1948 in Hugo, to George “Pete” and Lettye (Pate) Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, and the love of his life, Kathey Routon Smith.

Barry was a proud Veteran of the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War, being awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars, along with several other service medals. As a true cowboy, he loved everything that went along with ranching. He especially loved riding horses and was extremely proud of his regal horse, Yankee. The past few decades were spent hunting and fishing with his life-long best friend, Wayne Holder. Together, they traveled all over the USA and Canada enjoying the great outdoors. These were not ordinary fishing and hunting trips, they were “drop you from a plane in the wilderness” primitive camping adventures.

Barry (uncle bubba) was a perpetual jokester and prankster; he had a wonderful sense of humor. This mischievous behavior made him beloved (and somewhat tortured) by his nieces, nephew and anyone who ever met him. Family meant everything to Barry. His love and loyalty to his siblings, David and Dixie, were unparalleled. He was complicated and simple in the same breath. We describe him to have grit, humor, humility, passion and an extreme zest for life. It was in the past six years that this strong-willed man took on his biggest challenge. Diagnosed with cancer in 2015, the doctors told him he would only live six months. He showed them by beating the odds and living another five and half years. While we will all miss him greatly, there is peace in knowing he lived life to its fullest.

Barry is survived by his daughter, Kari (Lucas) Smith and spouse, Kevin Bowden of Antlers, Okla.; grandchildren: Hayley Shelby, Trevor Bowden, Skylar Rosenthal and Raven Bowden; brother, David Smith and wife, Jonell of Soper; sister, Dixie Hammons of Talihina, Okla.; along with a host of other family, friends and loved ones.

Lastly, the family would like to acknowledge and give special love to those who cared for Barry in his difficult times: Judy Hoffman, Itivia Johnson, Paula Lowrance and Elara Caring Hospice are true angels on earth. We are grateful to each of you.

Bro. Tim Harless officiated the service, under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home.
