Funeral servicees for Carl Chandler, of Boswell, Okla., were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 19, 2022 at New Life Family Church in Boswell. Carl passed away Sept. 14, 2022, at the age of 89.

Carl Newton Chandler was born Oct. 11, 1932 in Boswell, Okla., the son of James Stephen “Jim” Chandler and Hattie Myrtle (Young) Chandler. He married Orpha (Shumake) Chandler on Nov. 19, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Shortly after, Carl and Orpha returned to Boswell where they would raise their family. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Orpha; daughter, Janie Jones; brothers: Roy Chandler, Aubrey Chandler, Elwood Chandler; and sisters: Dorothy Sons, Mary Sue Riddle and Irene Eastwood.

Carl was one of the last of a dying breed of true cowboys. He was one of the few men of his era who was able to solely provide for his family and make a living from the cattle industry. In 1973, Carl earned the honor of being named Choctaw County Rancher of the Year. He was also a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattlemen’s Association. Carl thoroughly enjoyed working hard, and he was known by many as “the hardest worker they knew.” He was a great horseman and cattleman. Carl knew cattle like few others. In the early years before Veterinarians were local, Carl was the “county vet.” People would bring their livestock to him for his opinion and help. Carl was a man of his word, and would stand or fight for what he believed in. He believed and taught his kids that their “word” and “name” were everything. Later in years, he enjoyed playing dominoes and could count dominoes faster than anyone else, even in his last week of life. Most of all, Carl loved his family. Everything he did was for his family. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Left behind to cherish his memory are his sons: Carl DeWayne Chandler and wife, Tonya of Boswell, Robbie Chandler and wife, Gwen of Boswell; daughters: Sherri Brown of Boswell, Patricia Austin and husband, Rick of Boswell, Connie Watkins and husband, Phil of Denison, Texas; son-in-law, Clay Jones of Durant, Okla.; grandchildren: Carla Miller, Stacy Brown, Tracy Brown, Rikki Manous, Kara Burgess, Chad Austin, Brittany Pebsworth, Meagan Jorgenson, Jarryd Mathews, Hayley Charleton, Matt Jones, Mason Jones, Jessica James, Bryce Dillard, Breanne Dillard, Ashley Boydston, Alyssa Gunn, Taylor Cockerham, Josie Redwine; 39 great-grandchildren; seven greatgreat grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Lanell Riggs of Pampa, Texas; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment followed the service at Restland Cemetery in Boswell. Bro. Rick Austin officiated, assisted by Bro. Chad Austin, under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home.
