Curtis Ray Kernell

Funeral services for Curtis Ray Kernell will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2021 at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home in Hugo, Okla., with Bro. Mike Folmar officiating. Burial will be at the Springs Chapel Cemetery in Hugo. Curtis Ray Kernell, longtime resident of Hugo, passed away after a surprisingly quick battle with cancer on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021 at Peachtree Hospice in Fort Smith, Ark., at the age of 82.

Curtis was born in Hugo, to Virgil and Callie (Worthy) Kernell on Oct. 21, 1939, the fourth of seven children. He dropped out of Hugo High School to join the U.S. Navy for four years. Returning from the Navy he married the love of his life, Tommie Lou Redwine, Oct. 26, 1962. In 1964 they were blessed with their only child, Sally Jo. He loved the Lord and was a devoted husband, father and grandpa to Aaron, Colby and Ty. Curtis was a hard working man who worked for several companies and retired from Hugo Railcar Repair after 27 years. He enjoyed gardening, being outside, and Texoma Camping Club. Curtis was a lifetime dedicated member of the Church of Christ, currently serving as a deacon at Paris Church of Christ, Paris, Texas. Curtis is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: C.L., Junior, Tommy Joe Kernell; sister, Francis Blue, and nephew, Mike Beck. Curtis is survived by his wife of 59 years,

Curtis is survived by his wife of 59 years, Tommie Lou Kernell of the home; daughter, Sally Jo Long and husband, Clark of McAlester, Okla.; sister, Ruth Ann Boan and husband, Beau of Whiteboro, Texas; brother-in-law, Doyle Blue of Gunter, Texas; grandsons: Aaron Hester and wife, Savannah of Sulphur, Okla., Colby Hester of Fort Hood, Texas, Ty Hester and wife, Kristin of Ada, Okla.; bonus grandchildren: Jerrod Long and wife, Rainy of Spiro, Okla., and Callie Long of Muskogee, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren: Lydia, Layla, Madi and Clay. He was looking forward to the birth of Emma in March. He was also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and his church family.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home in Hugo.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren and family.

Family suggests donations may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital (his great-granddaughter, Madi is currently receiving treatments there).
