Funeral services for Haralyn Crews Shatswell were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo, Okla., with Pastor Jamie Stevenson of the Southside Baptist Church officiating. Haralyn passed away Monday, March 14, 2022 in Denison, Texas, at the age of 88.

Haralyn Joan Crews Shatswell was born Jan. 11, 1934 in Goodland, Okla., to Harry and Christina (LaCroix) Crews.

She graduated from Goodland High School in 1952, graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma University in Durant, Okla., with a degree in Music Education in 1956, then earned her Masters in Music Education from Central State University in Edmond, Okla., in 1970.

Haralyn was a proud member of the Choctaw tribe and a never-missed-a-game fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Haralyn taught piano, voice, organ and guitar and performed music for most of her life. She began piano lessons in Hugo under the watchful eye of her teacher Effie Riggins, where she developed a love of classical music. Haralyn mastered the piano and organ and delighted audiences with her classical, pop and church music performances.

She married Richard Mearl Shatswell in Paris, Texas, on May 25, 1963. She worked as a high school and junior high choir director for several public schools in Oklahoma and Texas. They lived in this area the past 33 years. She and Richard served this community through their music store, and they taught and encouraged singers and musicians of all ages in the Hugo area for many years. Haralyn enjoyed teaching, square-dancing, singing, bowling and camping, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents, Harry and Christina Crews.

Haralyn is survived by four children: Pamela Haynie and husband, Dallas of Houston, Texas, Eileen Hackler of Hugo, Barry Shatswell and spouse, Ward Morrison of Dallas, Texas, and William Shatswell of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Mercer of Durant, Okla., Jessica Hackler of Durant, Aaron Haynie and Patrick Haynie, both of Houston, Texas, and Megan Berryman, Marina Berryman and Richard Colton Shatswell, all of Oklahoma City; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as many other family and friends.
