Celebration of service for Jimmy Howell Holmes will be held Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at the First United Church in Hugo, Okla., with the Rev. Dr. Carol Txipama officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo. Jimmy went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, in Sawyer, Okla., the age of 80.

Jimmy Howell Holmes was born Feb. 15, 1942, in Kent, Okla., to Leonard and LaDell (Babb) Holmes. Jimmy was fondly known as “Byrd.” Jimmy had lived in this area most of his life and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hugo and served there as a Lay Leader for many years. Jimmy graduated from Grant High School in 1960, Southeastern Oklahoma University in 1965 and held an administrative degree from the University of Oklahoma. He married Joyce Henderson on Aug. 12, 1960, in Hugo. He was a teacher in Altus, Okla., and an administrator in Hugo, Hinton and Goodwell, Okla.

Jimmy retired from teaching in 1994 to his home in Sawyer, where he did some farming, ranching and building. Jimmy also spent many blessed hours with his grandchildren. Jimmy was preceded in death by parents, Leonard and LaDell Holmes; sisters: Jane Holmes, Sue Cooper and Margaret Holmes; brothers: Ralph Holmes and Billie Holmes.

Jimmy is survived by wife, Joyce Holmes of the home; sons: Derek Holmes and wife, Amy and Heath Holmes; brother, Jerry Holmes; grandchildren: Logan Holmes, Shane Holmes and wife, Audrey, Rylee Holmes, Halli Holmes, Elijah Holmes, Meridith Holmes, Cora Holmes, Reagan Joy Holmes and Silas Byrd Holmes and great-granddaughter, Lillie Holmes, and bonus grandchildren: Tyler,

law: Rosetta Self Holmes, Jacquie Klaus Holmes and Jeannie Henderson Wells, as well as numerous loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022 at the Mt. Olive Funeral Home in Hugo.

Donations to the elevator fund at the first United Methodist Church may be made in lieu of flowers.
