She was born on Dec. 25, 1937. She spent her early childhood in Lincoln, N.M., but lived most of her adolescence in Yuba City, Calif., where she graduated Valedictorian of her high school.

She then graduated from Madison College of Tennessee with a teaching certificate in 1958. Later she went on to become an ARRT accredited Radiologic Technologist for nearly 40 years. She worked with the 3rd private CT scanner in the United States. She studied at the Oakridge Nuclear Facility in order to become one of the first nuclear medicine technologists in the United States. She was married to Julius Piper for 62 years.

She was married to Julius Piper for 62 years. She had two sons: Charles Frank and David Wayne. She had two grandchildren: Charles’s daughter Melissa and David’s son, also named David.

Everyone who knew this remarkable woman came away from it for the better. She was a bottomless source of love and generosity. But she wasn’t all saccharine sweetness. She was also known for her quiet wit and sense of humor!

She was a country woman at heart, with her herd of beloved goats on her peaceful mountain farm. She always kept pets, whether they be dogs, cats, chickens or skunks! In fact, the Pipers had several pet skunks over a 40-year span. One even won a national pet skunk show!

Her memorial service was held at the 7th Day Adventist Church of Hugo on Jan. 5, 2021 at 4 p.m. It included a short service, music and a time to share loving memories, followed by a pot luck where more memories and stories of Rachel were encouraged.

May we all try to honor her memory by being a little bit kinder and making the world a more loving one.

Services were under the direction of Serenity Funeral Service of Antlers.
