Wesley Ervin (W.E. or Wes) Barfield went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the age of 94. He was born on April 11, 1929 to John Ervin Barfield and Almeida Demontolp Nance Barfield (also known as Taultsie, pronounced “Tolsie”).

Wes was born in a tent, in a cedar break, in the Rio Grande Valley. He walked to school for a while until he learned to ride a bike. Then he rode three and a half miles on his bike to school. Wes grew up picking cotton and working on a ranch, where Taultsie cooked for all the ranch hands.

He met the love of his life, Wanda Lou Wright, at a cafe in Purmela, Texas. Lou wrote “Wash Me” on the back of his 1939 Ford. They wrote letters when Wes was stationed in Korea. Wes and Lou married June 19, 1954, after his first deployment. They had two sons: Kenneth Wesley of Bennington, Okla., and Bryan Ervin of Midlothian, Texas. Lou went to Heaven in 2003. At the time of his death, he was married to Mary Wynn Barfield.

Wes was very involved in Kenwood Baptist Church in Oak Cliff, Texas, after he accepted Christ into his life. Every year the men would go fishing at Lake Texoma to catch fish for a community fish fry for the church. He was influential in many of the “preacher boys” lives from the church. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Soper, Okla., at the time of his death.

Those left to cherish memories of Wes are his wife, Mary Wynn Barfield of the home; his sons: Kenneth Barfield and wife, Jan of Bennington and Bryan Barfield and wife, Jan of Midlothian, Texas, and his brother, L.D. White. His legacy lives on with his grandchildren: Jaci Bates of Bennington, Jay and Sasha Barfield of Bennington, Jakeb and Jeannie Barfield of Allen, Okla., Jaelin and Dustin Baker of Bennington, Kelli and Nathan Siegler of Midlothian, Texas, Kyle and Hailey Barfield of Midlothian, and Kody Barfield and fiance, Kate of Itasca, Texas, as well as his great-grandchildren: Rhylar, Jace, Jarret, Jadyn, Davin, Zane, Maddox, Gunner, Westyn, Kole, Kaylie, Emeri, Easton, Eliana and Evie.

Preceding him in death are his father, John Ervin Barfield; mother, Almeida White; his loving wife, Lou “Mama Lou” Barfield, and his great-grandson, Mason Barfield.

His funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2023 at Blue River Fellowship in Caddo, Okla., with Ronnie Yarber, David McNary and Tyler Eggalston officiating. Wesley was laid to rest in Old Church Cemetery in Bennington following his funeral service.

Those serving as pallbearers were: Jay Barfield, Jakeb Barfield, Kyle Barfield, Kody Barfield, Nathan Siegler and Dustin Baker. Honorary pallbearers were his great-grandsons: Jace, Jarret, Rhylar, Kole, Easton, Gunner, Westyn, Davin, Zane and Maddox.

Services were under the direction of Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home, Durant.
