• Animated series celebrates Native American culture DURANT –– Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Chief Gary Batton appears in the recently launched second season of Netflix’s “Spirit Rangers.” The animated show focuses on Kodi, Summer and Eddy, three kids living and working in a national park with their family. But the siblings have a secret: They can transform into spirits and enter the Spirit Park, where they help protect the natural environment, they call home.

OMRF receives $2.6 million to study mutations connected to skin diseases

The National Institutes of Health has awarded the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation $2.6 million to unravel how mutations in a single gene connect to skin health. With the five-year grant, OMRF scientist Lorin Olson, Ph.D., will continue his research on a protein signal called platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which plays a key role in the body’s ability to repair wounds.

Cherokee Nation pledges $75K to Alzheimer’s Association

Fort Towson Historic Site to host woodturning demonstration, youth photography program

FORT TOWSON –– The Fort Towson Historic Site will host two programs on Saturday, May 20. The Southeastern Oklahoma Woodturners will present a woodturning demonstration for all ages from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nature photography will be the featured topic at the “Kids Make History” event from 1-3 p.m.

Hugo High School announces class of 2023 Honor graduates

2023 Hugo High School Valedictorian is Caleb Seth Joe: The son of Becka and Richard Ludlow and the grandson of Alberta and Larry Rudrow. He has lettered in football for four years, powerlifting for four years and track for one year. He also competed on the curriculum team for two years. Caleb has participated in Student Council for one year, Band for three years, National Honor Society for two years and Leo Club for four years. He was named Leo Club Volunteer of the Year in 2020 and won the Most Outstanding Player Award in band. Caleb was also a two-time First Team All District football player, was named Football Defensive Player of the Year and was a two-time state contender in Powerlifting. After graduation, Caleb plans to major in electrical engineering at the University of Oklahoma.
