Hugo Lions Club names Students of the Month, scholarship winners

The Hugo Lions Club is committed to helping young people succeed. In our efforts to do this, we award scholarships each year. This year’s Hugo Lions Club Scholarship recipients are: Desiree McGriff from Soper High School, Zachary Covington from Fort Towson High School, and Jennifer Jones from Hugo High School. Each of these students will receive $1,000 to help them with their education beyond high school.

BOSWELL VFW Post 1048 host the Patriot Pen Essay contest for grades 6-8 and Voice of Democracy for grades 9-12 each year. The VFW Post 1048 members Ish Web and Jim Woods came to present awards to a couple of Boswell students who participated in this year’s essay contest. Students were awarded certificates of achievements and scholarship monies.

Choctaw Nation volunteers lend helping hands in Valliant

VALLIANT –– The teamwork phrase at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) “Together We’re More” became even better understood recently in Valliant. One town official expressed his gratitude to the 11 Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) volunteers and five community members who spent the day sprucing up the City Park.

DURING WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD, Louie Lighting Bug visited Little Dixie students at the Antlers, Broken Bow, Idabel, Valliant and Hugo early childhood centers, with Executive Director, Becky Reynolds. Teachers were gifted with books for their classrooms and share safety messages and educational materials with students (provided by PSO). Students enjoyed the special visit by Ms. Reynolds and Louie and look forward to new adventures during story time through the new books that were donated.

Murder case dismissed in Choctaw County due to lack of jurisdiction

HUGO –– The case against a Hugo teen for first-degree murder has been dismissed in Choctaw County after the court was notified of a lack of jurisdiction/McGirt notice. Kevion Wallace was charged on complaints of first-degree murder after an OSBI investigation into the death of Noah Shoemake, of Antlers, Okla., on Jan.

Fort Towson School names Honor Grads

VALEDICTORIAN: ZACHARY COVINGTON is the son of Bryan Covington of Hugo and Natasha Kinslow of Fort Towson. His grandparents are Robert and Naoma Kinslow of Fort Towson and Lynn and Margaret Covington of Hugo. Zachary is involved in NHS, FCCLA, SEOSU Honor Program, basketball for two years, baseball for one year, 4-H, Boys and Girls Club of Fort Towson staff, placed second place in State for Algebra 1, third place in State for Business Math. He has chosen to attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University and major in chemistry. His future plans and goals are to attend Oklahoma State University and graduate with a degree in Aerospace Engineering.
